in america. it is now the grief-stricken home of the second deadliest school shooting in u.s. history. 28 people are dead, including the shooter. late today, connecticut's chief medical examiner, wayne carver, reported that the autopsies on all the children are now complete. all 20 of them were shot more than once by 20-year-old adam lanza. police have also released the names of those killed, eight boys, 12 girls, between the ages of 6 and 7. all were first graders. six adults at the school were also murdered, and investigators say they now have some very good evidence explaining what wasde . we have a team of cbs news correspondents and producers on this still-developing story. we begin with margaret brennan here in newtown. >> reporter: gflg, jim. and the bodies of those 12 girls, eight boys, and six adult women killed right here in the sandy hook shooting yesterday are being returned to their families tonight, more than 24 hour after the brutal mass six-year-old emilie parker and jesse lewis. tomorrow, the medical examiner will conduct autopsies on adam lanza and his mother. and the fa

there was one shooter. the person who was detyned near the shooting scene was a man described as wearing b.d.u.s, khaki fatigues and working near the woods. i had a number of people tell me we don't think he's a player in this. that said, now the associated press says they're talking to the shooter's younger brother as john made the point this might just be due diligence by investigators to obviously want to talk to available family members and friends and close associates. so we can't say one way or the other and i think we need to be careful about not getting out too far too fast. because as we've learned in the past these big stories are kind of malleable, the facts, and they tend to change. on the guns, we have a law enforcement official, norah, telling us that with the shooter's body inside the school the police have recovered two handguns. one is a sig sauer, as john mentioned, that's the service revolver the secret service carries and the other is a 9 millimeter, the weapon of choice for many place departments. both are efficient weapons. kind of high quality weapons. and would have allow

in 1998 when that guy walked in and killed two u.s. capitol policemen. and i thought, i mean, how many times do we have to go through this? this is coming from a guy, by the way, that's from the south. this is coming from a guy that owns guns, that sit in my home unloaded. no kids in my house, just to be clear. this is coming from a guy they grew up in a household with guns that sat in a locked gun closet. i knew that if i went near them my father was going to beat the hell out of me. i knew it. but we are now at a tipping point. we are now at a stage where we are almost ten years after the assault weapons ban has expired. if you need a 223, if you need an ak-47 to shoot bambi, you have bigger problems. you don't need those guns. you don't need them to go hunting. i get gun rights. i totally like gun rights. but you don't need those kinds of things. and you don't need crazy people being able to get them, either through their parents, through loopholes going through these gun shows, no background checks. >> internet sites. >> internet sites. it's ridiculous. way too many loopholes. way

the man behind one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history was a 20 year old, whose brother has told them that the gunman had a history of mental problems, but the precise nature of his connection to the elementary school is not yet clear this morning. investigators say the horrifying day began three miles from the santdy hook school, at the house where the gunman, identified by authorities as 20-year-old adam lanza, lived with his mother nancy who had worked at the school. they believe he shot and killed her there, then drove her car to sandy hook elementary. he was dressed all in black and heavily armed. carrying three guns, two handguns and a rifle. those weapons were legally purchased by his mother. once inside, he fired dozens of grounds, killing the children at close range. >> minutes after our officers were there, they realized, you know, what a horrific scene we had there. >> at first, there was widespread confusion about the gunman's identity. officials say that's because adam lanza was carrying an id belonging to his 24-year-old brother ryan who lives in hoboken, new jersey
